the 15th symposium of the French Society of Microscopy (SFµ)

to be held July 4 – July 7, 2017 in Bordeaux, France.

 

Karine Rousseau, Senior Technical Expert, will be joining the event and will present two posters during this week:

“Optimized sample preparation for advanced physical-chemical characterization of a fuel cell”: the best preparation parameters to perform artefact-free advanced characterization of MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly) are reviewed in this poster. Comparative preparation tests including dry polishing and ultramicrotomy are investigated. Structural and chemical analyses on two Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells are performed by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (X-EDS).

“Mixing microscopy techniques for detailed assessment of coating surface”: this poster focuses on two types of coating surface structure, which have very interesting tribological behaviours: Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) and Titanium nitride (TiN). A comparison between three microscopy techniques (Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy) is sometimes necessary to qualify coating surface quality. However, in some cases, inconsistencies between these results are pointed and induce the use of other characterization techniques. It was the case of DLC coating: X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) was used to evaluate sp2/sp3 ratio of the carbon and then compare with Energy Electron Loss Spectroscopy (EELS).
 

Since 1989, this Congress aims to bring together a large community of scientists around the subject of microscopy and not only electron microscopy. Fifteen sessions cover applications and developments in life science, materials science, instrumentation and methods.
