Batteries Tests Capabilities & Equipments

Test equipment for electrical characterization:
---- Ranging from small size button/coin cells
-----to fully integrated battery pack for the automotive industry (250 kW)
---- Frequency Response Analyzer (FRA) for cell impedance evaluation

Climate chambers (-20 - + 60 °C) and ovens, thermal baths
Glove box under dry air and inert atmosphere for construction analyses

Case 1 : X1-Y1 batteries in non conformity when received by the customer

Electrical :

- Charge/ Discharge tests and capacitance measurement
- Charge C10 during 16h and discharge 5C during 5h (stop at 1V)
- Stabilisation
- Capacitance measurement
- Test duration: 10 days
- Cycles during 8 days at different charge/discharge conditions (C/40 to C/2)
- Optional : Impedence spectroscopy : internal R measurement, from a few mHz to 65KHz.

Physical : Battery Opening and sample extraction

- Visual and optical Inspections
- Sample preparation for access to the active material (electrolyte removal, drying in oven)
- Embedding and polishing
- SEM/EDX observation
- Optional : X-Ray Diffraction for grain size of negative material

Case 2 : X2-Y2 Batteries , not in correspondance with the expected performances (field return).

Phase 1 - Engineering
- Use condition study : determination of a representative functional user profile (for further ageing tests)

Phase 2 - Performance Tests
- Charge and Discharge cycles at 3 oven temperatures (25°C, 0°C, -10°C)
- Different discharge conditions (1C, 0.5C, 0.2C)

Phase 3 - Endurance Tests
- Tests following performance tests according to the profile as defined phase1

Phase 4 -  BMS characterization
- Battery opening
- For each cell : Voltage measurement
Capacitance measurement according to 0.5C discharge

Case 3 : X3-Y3 Batteries, Comparative tests

Phase 1 - Performance Tests
- Initial capacitance measurement
- Five cycles at C/10 down to 70% of discharge depth
- Residual discharge

Phase 2 - Yield Tests
- Five cycles between 0 and 50% SOC, then between 0 and 100% SOC

Phase 3 - Stratification
- Five cycles up to 14.1V, then five cycles up to Capacitance=1.2C10

Phase 4 -  Ageing tests, according to CEI 61427
- Temperature ramp up from 25°C to 40°C
- Cycling according to Steps A and B
